This exciting attraction brings to mind the old Johnny Cash song that goes something like, “I hear the train a comin’, it’s rollin’ ‘round the bend…and I ain’t seen the sunshine since I don’t know when…” The Orange Blosson Cannonball Train is debuting it’s first ride for Central Floridians this weekend. 300 tickets have already been purchased for the train which will transport passengers from Winter Garden to Ocoee on a 75-minute ride.
This is the ONLY steam engine train operating in Florida at this time outside of theme parks. The Cannonball train is also known for its appearances in “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” “True Grit” and 30 other motion pictures. It’s nickname is affectionately known as the “Movie Train.” For those of you unable to take a ride, you may hear it…or smell it! With whistles blowing and steam rising, there’s going to be a lot of folks effected as the sights and sounds of the Cannonball can be felt at a three mile radius. If you aren’t familiar with the smell of a steam-engine, think of hickory barbeque and that is exactly what the steam box emits.
Cannonball runs at 10mph and will cross over eight roads where motorists may experience a bit of a wait. Police will be on hand for traffic control and safety. The Central Florida Railroad Historical Society anticipates many more events to come with this fantastic, history-rich steam locomotive. Tickets for adults are $20.00, children ages 4-12 are $15.00. The train can hold in upwards of 1,600 passengers. Don’t miss out on this little piece of history.
Our Hampton Inn Leesburg-Tavares would love to be your home-away-from-home as you venture down to the area. We look forward to more chug-a-luggin’ events in the future here in the beautiful Leesburg-Tavares, Florida area.
